The misinformation and misunderstanding I have seen here is amazing. First, capitalism is a free economy, i.e., not subject to government control or regulation. The term "regulated capitalism" is already accurately defined by another single word, fascism, the nonsensical pseudo-concept of private ownership of property subject to government control of the use and disposition of said property (environmental laws anyone?). Second, those who blame capitalism for the economic ills that have befallen the United States of America do not understand that capitalism has not existed in this nation for over 100 years. There is a structure of government regulation comprising some 75,000 pages all subject ti political when for enforcement or relaxation depending on the political influence of parties involved (ask John McCain about Charles Keating). Another thing most people do not know or ignore is that little of the regulatory volume has any legitimate constitutional basis. IAW the Constitution, only Congress may enact law. No other body or individual, elected or appointed, has the legitimate authority to create law yet all these regulations and controls are enforced as if they are legitimate law. Another thing few people consciously recognize is the when you get to fundamental principles, there is no substantive difference between conservatives and liberals. The differences are a matter of degree with conservatives generally tolerant of less totalitarian tyranny than liberals who are collectivists who mask their true identifty by using various innocuous euphemisms to hide their true colors. Note that recently liberals have chosen to return to their "progressive" roots since liberalism is finally being too well recognized as camouflage for collectivism. The Founding Fathers defined a single purpose for government in the founding documents, specifically and singularly to protect the rights of the individual. Both liberal and conservatives want use of the power of government to impose their beliefs from drug prohibition to hate crimes which is nothing more than the criminalization of unpopular thought or words. I've also found that few people are aware that three long standing US institutions are defined in the Communist Manifest as tools for conversion of a society to Communism. These are (1) the Progressive Income Tax, (2) the Inheritance (death) tax and (3) a "free" education in a public school system. If you doubt me, look up the Communist Manifest and read it. Finally, as I noted above, most of America's economic woes have been the result of government intrusion and manipulation, NOT capitalism. Here is a link giving some facts regarding the Great Depression and the reasons for its prolonged duration: http://www.gmu.edu/departments/economics/wew/articles/09/GreatMythsOfTheGreatDepression.pdf
