I have had the misfortune of going to Anping as well. When life gives you a choice of Anping or death, choose death. Anping is a typical northern city, in the fact that anything and everything interesting about it was torn apart in the 60s and 70s and left with the standard socialist look... and then left to deteriorate. However, there is literally nothing there. I spent 2 long days in the city and came to a quick decision to escape as soon as I could and never go back. There is a reason why they try to offer foreigners 7000 a month to teach English there, it is because there is nothing whatsoever to do. The town actually has no bars or KTV (legitimate or otherwise). There is nothing there apart from pigs, wire mesh and the smell. I have lived in China for 3 years now and have experienced many levels of life. From rural sichuan suburb to Shanghai and Beijing... and NEVER have I been so revolted by a place in my entire life. It was a 2-day English gig that I did for some extra money, I will admit that freely... however the agency was careful to not mention the actual location until I was already there and the ride was gone and I found myself in a musty room with a broken leaky air conditioner with a filthy towel, no soap and a used toothbrush. This was the ONLY hotel in town at the time. The OP is 100% accurate, Anping is possibly the filthiest, smelliest, ugliest city in China. Apologies if you live there and are reading this, I hope you escape soon.
