I just realized that this site has the most controversial description here: https://www.travelchinaguide.com/embassy/visa/free-transit-144hour.htm "The layover time should be limited to 144 hours. However, the 144-hour free stay period counts from 00:00 of the day following passengers' arrival. That is to say, the allowed time to stay is actually a little bit longer than 144 hours. If one arrives at 6:00am on July 1, the layover time counts from 00:00 of July 2 and the passenger should have a ticket with the scheduled departure time before 23:59 of July 7." Is this correct? what is the source, as I cant find this level of detail anywhere else. for example: http://sh-immigration.gov.cn/listPageEn.aspx?lx=40&id=4414 states that the visa validity - once issued - is calculated starting from the following midnight ( so indeed the validity could be >144). But it also says that I "should provide the immigration officer with a valid international travel document and onward air ticket to a third country with confirmed date and seat within 144 hours upon arrival". What I read is that the validity once issued could be >144, BUT if I show up with a return ticket for a date later than 144 hours, the visa WON'T be issued. If this is the case, the example provided by travelchinaguide.com is misleading and should be corrected.
