Changchun travel tips for first time visitors
By SANETRAVELLER | 1/15/2025 2:46:55 AM

Changchun, the capital of Jilin Province in northeast China, offers a blend of rich history, modern development, and natural beauty. Here are essential travel tips to make the most of your visit:

1. Best Time to Visit:
Changchun experiences distinct seasons. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are pleasant with mild temperatures, making them ideal for sightseeing. Winters (November-March) are cold but perfect for snow enthusiasts, as Changchun hosts ice festivals and skiing activities.

2. Transportation:
Changchun's metro system is efficient and covers major tourist attractions. Taxis are widely available but ensure the driver uses the meter or negotiate the fare beforehand. Mobile payment apps like WeChat and Alipay are commonly accepted, though cash is also used. Renting a bicycle is a great option for exploring scenic spots like Nanhu Park.

3. Must-Visit Attractions:

Puppet Emperor’s Palace: Learn about Changchun’s history as the capital of the Japanese-controlled Manchukuo state.
Changchun Movie Wonderland: A fun destination for film lovers, offering movie-themed attractions and experiences.
Jingyuetan National Forest Park: Perfect for nature lovers and outdoor activities.
World Sculpture Park: Features works by artists from around the globe in a beautifully landscaped setting.
4. Food and Dining:
Try local specialties like dumplings, hotpot, and spicy Jilin-style cuisine. Street food stalls offer tasty snacks, but be mindful of hygiene.

5. Language and Communication:
Mandarin is the primary language spoken. English is not widely understood, so having a translation app can be helpful. Learning a few basic Mandarin phrases can improve your experience.

6. Weather and Clothing:
Dress in layers during colder months and carry essentials like gloves and scarves. In summer, light breathable clothing and sunscreen are recommended.

7. Cultural Etiquette:
Respect local customs, such as greeting people with a polite nod or handshake. Be mindful of noise levels in public places and avoid sensitive topics in conversations.

With these tips, your journey to Changchun will be smooth and memorable. Enjoy the city’s cultural charm and modern amenities!

Keep warm

Most parts of China are experiencing the chilliest winter in the past several decades. The South China also become very cold and snowy. If you want to have a winter travel to China, please bring enough thick clothes to keep warm.

If you go to Changchun, you shouldn't miss Errenzhuan, a kind of traditional folk art of Dongbei (Northeast part of China). A good place for you to enjoy it is Heping Theatre which is located in No.295, Chongqing Lu, Changchun.

Have fun!

Winter-Only Wu Song
By LEMONCACTUS | 1/30/2006 7:48:14 AM

The Wu Song really is spectacular.

A unique winter wonderland created by warm river water meeting freezing fog temperatures. All along the river everything is turned white with a heavy frost.

For the best landscape I recommend going East along the river. Especially from the Catholic Church head East, there is a nice park area with sculptures, trees and...erm... tanks!

Get up early, the Wu Song is at its best between 7am - 10am.

Wrap up warm. It's absolutely freezing and the vapour sticks to your hair/clothes etc and freezes them!

Enjoy!

Budget Accommodation
By LEMONCACTUS | 1/30/2006 7:49:21 AM

Jilin City isn't glamorous or on the tourist trail, so places to stay are limited.

I stayed at Tian Shi Bin Guan (Angel Hotel). It is in an excellent location for viewing the Wu Song, being just 2 minutes walk from the Song Hua Jiang (Song Hua River) and the Catholic Church.

A twin room cost me 120RMB. Breakfast was included, nothing fancy but good enough. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

I did return back at around midnight one evening and the doors were locked. Fortunately a security guard was awake and unlocked them ;)

Not sure how good their English is though!

Address: 2 Nanjing Jie, Jilin City
