Food
By XINYI | 8/26/2004 11:59:25 PM

This applies to all the major cities in China. The best food in China comes from the local street vendors or small resturants. They are usually cheap and delicious. Do not go to well established posh looking resturants. My experience usually tells me that they are either too westernised or too unsuited to my taste. However this is my opinion and the choice is yours. But then you didn't go to China to have a ham sandwich or a salad did you?

Temple of Confucius
By EASTEFEN | 5/24/2004 3:21:35 PM

I didnt go here by day as my friend told me there was nothing worth seeing. He said 'meet me at 6pm' which I did, and we had a 'lovely stroll' down the street lined with clothes shops, snack food outlets, music blaring out loud on the speakers and then stopped in KFC which was opposite McDonalds for a cup of tea as it was a cold night! So as you can see, things have changed somewhat to when it was first built!

I didnt even get to see the Temple as apparently its not open to the public anymore! There was a lake at the bottom of the street which was very pretty as there were lights everywhere and pictures of dragons which lit up and fountains which danced to the music.

At this waterfront both day and night, you can hire a leisure boat which slowly takes you down to Zhonghua Men (the big gate in the north within the city walls). This I can imagine to be extremely relaxing, as, afterall, it was on this very same lake that the famous Tang poet Liu Yuxi wrote his most famous poem.

The area was nice and it was apparent that both foreigners and local people visit this area often, and it almost reminded me of the Silk Market In Beijing, but hassle free!!!!

About 2km south of Xinjiekou, leads you to the Temple of Confucius area, which begins at Jiankang Lu, around the bottom end of Taiping Lu.

Taihu Lake
By DENNIS | 4/27/2004 10:17:19 AM

Once you're in Wuxi never miss the opportunity to see the Taihu Lake! Go to The Turtle's Head and see the cherry blossoms in full bloom, The Liyuan Garden for the grotesque rock formations or the Fairy Islets for the huge carved buddhist statues! The boat ride around these places is worth a lifetime of precious memories!

Purple Mountain
By DENNIS | 4/27/2004 10:10:09 AM

Ni Hao,

Purple mountain in my mind! It will actually stay there forever once you see the place! The Sun-yat-Sen Mausoleum with its 392 steps is a must see as well as the Ming tombs and the Linggu Temple with 291 steps leading all the way to the top! If you have the luxury of time...go around the mountain on foot! The experience is invigorating!

What to know
By DENNIS | 4/25/2004 9:16:52 PM

Ni Hao,

Being a foreigner in China, is quite demanding as you would have to struggle with the language barrier. My best tip for people travelling from one place to another is to know the chinese character of the place you intend to go to and make sure you jot down the plate number of the bus...it may prove very helpful once you leave some stuff behind. When I was at the bus station I paid for a ticket to go to Taizhou, what I didn't know was that the bus I rode was just stopping over at the place, it was not actually its final destination. I had to get down right before reaching the toll gate leading to the main highway as I suspected something was amiss. In my haste, I left some of my stuff in the bus. Luckily a bus station I went to helped me find my stuff having showed them the ticket. I was lucky then...others might not be so lucky..so be careful!
