Essential Haikou Travel Tips for First-Time Visitors
By SANETRAVELLER | 12/26/2024 12:33:56 AM
Haikou, the capital of Hainan Province, offers a mix of natural beauty and urban life. Here are some essential tips for first-time visitors:
Weather: Haikou has a tropical climate. Bring light, breathable clothing, sunscreen, and stay hydrated, especially in summer when temperatures can rise above 30°C (86°F).
Transportation: Taxis, buses, and bike rentals are common. The city is also bike-friendly, with many bike lanes. Consider using local ride-hailing apps like Didi.
Language: Mandarin is widely spoken. Learning basic phrases like “Ni hao” (Hello) and “Xie xie” (Thank you) will be helpful, though some locals may understand basic English.
Local Cuisine: Try Hainanese chicken rice, coconut-based dishes, and tropical fruits. Street food is abundant and delicious.
Must-See Attractions: Visit the Hainan Museum, Haikou Old Town, Wugong Temple, and Holiday Beach. The nearby volcanic park offers scenic views.
Cultural Etiquette: Be respectful of local customs. Bargaining is common in markets, and tipping is not customary.
Enjoy exploring Haikou’s rich culture, history, and natural beauty

Hello out there. Just arrived in Haikou and wondering if I could get some tips about moving around Haikou. I'd like to do tours that may include English but don't want tto spend an arm and a leg or get ripped off? Not that I'm expecting that but wonder if anyone here has any hints? I'm on holiday for a 12 days and although with my partner bothe expats, she is with family and I'd like to use the time wisely?
Hope for some tips and look forward to chatting more on this site.
