Actually, most local Chinese spend far far less than RMB4,000.

Sure you can live like a local on this money, most Chinese live on less than this, most teachers earn less than Y2000 a month. But also remember that most families live as well as they do as there are multiple income earners in a household.

Before you leave, you should try to make friends with some people who would like to help you. Most importantly they are more likely to be able to find some better/cheaper accommodation than you can for yourself.

you should stay in ShuHe Ancient Town if you go to Lijiang, just 6km away from Lijiang city. It's a quite but convenient small town. And you can live in Friend Guest House. The boss was a backpacker, from Taiwan, living in lijiang now.She is not a business person, just for fun to open this guest house(no bar & karaok inside, but has a small basketball court). She has traveled many place in China. If you have any question there, she can help you even though you don't live her G.H.

GUEST32222 We are relocating to Zhuji in 2008. How much money do I need per month for food (mostly home cooked meals) for 2 people?

You can live on 4000 Yuan in Guilin, and be very comfortable. Yangshuo would be even cheaper. You could get a decent small apt for about 1000, and food would cost 500 yuan (if you cooked yourself and budgeted well) to 2000 yuan (eating like a King!).

Shenzhen would need 3 times that.

I'm going to live in Shenzhen.
I will receive a 4,000RMB salary per mounth...
...but I will not have to spend money for a room or food...
Is it possible to live there with this salary?

Thank U to everyone!!

GUESTSRIRAM I am thinking of spending a few months in China to learn chinese language. It would
be my first time. I Would like to ask, can someone live
comfortably in China, say in a smaller city like Guilin or
Shenzhen, on a modest budget of RMB4,000 a month?
