It depends, but may I know what is your purpose to China? If for tourism, it will not be a problem for you to get visa.

GUEST02152 Just want to say that I came in here earlier and didn't give an update. I went to China from the US and when I applied for the visa I didn't list any criminal record (felony). They accepted me and I stayed there for 1.5 months before returning. No problems.

GUEST15051 I am a teacher in China and have lived here for the past 12 years. I am married and am settled. In my time in China, I have taught students from all ages, from small children, to kids, to teens, college students and adults. Never had any real problems besides the normal stuff.

I do have a criminal record that I am not proud of. I stole a steak from a supermarket, and have a reckless driving violation. The shoplifting offense is from 1996. 17 years ago. Like I said, I have been here for 12 years and have never had any problem with authority here, nor do I put my freedom here in jeopardy.

There has been a spate of pedophiles who have been caught in China working in two private schools. Because of this, from what I have read, that China is going to at least require people here on a Z visa, whether new or renew, to get a Crimnal Background Check from their nation of origin. This scares the hell out of me. I came here to get a "new start" and I for the most part have been very happy here. Because I was drunk and stole a steak, my life here is hanging by threads, because of some goddamned pedos.

I have read from someone in Shenzhen that this was required as of July 1, with a poster from the expat site in Beijing stating that visa renewals is suspended until July 1 when the CBC check will be put into action nationwide.

Somewhat of a silver lining in that I can more than likely stay on a tourist L visa and just live with my wife. Se is very successful and I do not really need to work, amd could live on a stipend with her. But if this CBC check is for real, I am stuck between a proverbial rock and a hard place. I am also scared to death and very resentful that this garbage from almost two decades ago might ruin me now.

GUEST30211 In order to get a Z visa, does your criminal record have to be completely clean? Or will it be open to interpretation (meaning if you have a minor misdemeanor from a decade ago rather than a recent felony, you may still have a chance to obtain a Z visa)?

GUEST7899 GUEST30211,

Previously, police clearance is not needed when applying for a Z. But I have heard that police clearance is needed when apply for Z after July 1. You'd better confirm this with the embassy since no further information has been found on the internet.

I think that your previous record will be shown on the police clearance.

GUEST30211 @GUEST7899

Thanks!
I've been reading about the new July 1st regs. It looks like it's so new that nobody is certain what the impact will be. I am hoping it is not too strict. I have a misdemeanor (very minor - I was posting a flyer on a public lamp post!). The misdemeanor shows up on the document I need to include in my visa application as part of the new regs. So I'm hoping it will be treated differently than, say, a crime of a more egregious nature. I would hate to be denied a work visa based solely on this misdemeanor when I am so looking forward to teaching!

GUEST14190 All -

Please help! I have a criminal record and am in the middle of visa processing and am very worried I'll get rejected.

Criminal Record:
-Marijuana Misdemeanor (2009)
-Public Drunkeness and Evading Rent (June 2013) - both are getting dropped upon my completion of community service effective September 6, 2013.

China:
-Traveled to China this past winter for two weeks, and no visa complications
-Got accepted into a school in Beijing to start class Sept. 1, 2013

Anyone have any insight about what I can expect for my visa application? Should hear back later in the day and will let you all know how it goes!
