Try to buy light
INTIANJIN | Tianjin | 8/14/2004 8:30:21 AM

There are so many things to buy in China and it doesn't take long before you've attained an extra suitcase worth of goods. Airlines generally have a weight restriction on luggage and charge a steep fee for every kilo over that limit. If you are going to be buying alot of stuff then try to focus on the lighter things. China has many beautiful iron, glass, and ceramic goods but buying too many may leave you leaving them behind at the airport's checking counter.

Here is an idea of baggage allowances.
For economy class travel you may be restricted to a 20kg checked bag and an 8kg carry on bag. For first/business class you may be restricted to 30kg checked and 10kg carry on. For every kg over the limit you may be charged between $15-30 USD.

Some Beijing prices

Here are some market prices based on my purchases in Beijing:

Jeans go from 60-120RMB

Shirts go from 15RMB for plain small ones to 70RMB for ornamented beautiful ones.

Chopsticks go from 0.2RMB for wooden ones to 10RMB for fake jade ones.

Those fake marble and jade rock balls you see everywhere go for 2RMB-5RMB.

A pair of dress socks (like playboy ones) are 4RMB.

The large sized chinese painting copy for 30RMB (you'll see stupid high prices in some places)

Watch (doesn't matter which) for 15RMB.

Old style big round glasses for 30RMB.

Traditional handmade shoes for 50RMB.

Bottle water 2RMB.

Bottle pop 3RMB.

Rickshaw averages 5-12RMB.

Big market in Tang Gu Tianjin
INTIANJIN | Tianjin | 7/3/2004 11:21:36 PM

In the outskirts of Tianjin near the water is an area called Tang Gu. Its like a city within a city. Its home to a popular market called Market Exotic. They sell alot of swords, binoculars, telescopes, knives, lights, tobacco products, fishing gear, clothing, pens, shoes, and I even saw electric tasers guns. They ask extremely high prices at first so you have to work them down to realistic values.

We got one seller down to 5RMB for some small keychain lights which someone else asked 30RMB for. I was prewarned about their extreme markups before I came. A light magnifier which you'd see in bulk at a dollar store had an asking price of 180RMB there.

They go as low as anywhere else + 10%.

To get there go on the Jin Bin Expressway (toll highway). When you arrive you'll see a shopping street on the left with a monument of 4 women holding a glove in front of it. Thats where to start.

Market psychology
INTIANJIN | Tianjin | 7/2/2004 10:25:49 PM

Here is an idea of the bargaining pschology here:

You ask how much an item is. You are given a figure which seems good when you convert it to your home currency. You accept it and the seller now knows what a foreigner is willing to pay.

When bargaining the seller is going to ask you what you are willing to pay. This is a trick which benefits them. If they are asking 100RMB and you say no its too high, they will ask you what you think. You say 60RMB. The item is only worth 40RMB but you've just set a minimum so now they are going to say 'nooo...' and do some theatrics and say 80RMB. After a while you'll settle on 70RMB.

Prices you are given are going to be twice that or more than what a local will pay. Here are some examples of the bargaining I've done:

2 pillow cases.
Seller was asking 40RMB.
I got 4 for 50RMB.

1 traditional dress.
Seller was asking 100RMB.
I got it for 50RMB.

1 traditional shirt.
Seller was asking 100RMB.
I got it for 38RMB.
It took quite a bit of theatrics on both of our parts and the lady kept saying '40RMB.. only 2RMB.. not much'. I told her that the 2RMB was my breakfast.

1 traditional night robe.
Seller was asking 90RMB.
I got it for 50RMB.

A cool pocket knife.
Seller was asking 20RMB.
I got it for 10RMB.

My first purchase was 2 watches. I paid 80RMB each thinking I did good to get them down from 105. Just today I was offered the same selection of watches for 20RMB a piece.

I'm including the pics of the traditional clothing I purchased. They look beautiful in real life and will look great mounted on my wall.

Computer Central

Cyber Mart is a 3 story building the size of a square block with about 200 venders inside. You can purchase things like 40GB harddrives for 415 RMB or webcams for as low as 60RMB. They have really cool stuff and all the namebrands we love. Its a total candy store :D

Cyber Mart is on An Shan Xi road in the Nan Kai district.
