Although have traveled to many places in China, I still think Summer Palace is China’s most beautiful garden.

When is the best time to visit the Summer Palace in a year? Spring, summer and autumn are all OK, especially summer, when the garden is covered by green plants, the Kunming Lake is rippling, the blue sky is dotted with white clouds and the birds are singing everywhere. It is a time when you can experience the historical and cultural atmosphere of the royal garden as enjoy the amazing scenery.

When is the best time to visit in a day? I strongly recommend you to spend a whole day in the garden, for there are so many places to see and you’ll be regretful to miss any of it. However, if you are only going to take some photos, 0700-1000 in the morning and dusk (1700-1600 in summer) are for your choices. If you want a leisure tour, better avoid going on weekends or during holidays; or visit it in the early morning or after 1700, when the visitors have not arrived yet or have left already. If you are just a normal visitor, then the opening hours of most sites in it are 0800-1630.

About the traveling itinerary:
The Summer Palace altogether has five gates: Ruyi Gate, North Palace Gate, East Palace Gate, New Palace Gate and South Gate. If you’ll go there by bus, the North Palace Gate and East Palace Gate are the best starting points, for the scenic sites are concentrated here and many buses as well as a subway line have a stop around them. But you may get stuck in a traffic jam if by bus. If you’ll reach it by self-driving, the New Palace Gate is better, where there are fewer traffic jams. The South Gate and Ruyi Gate are preferred by those do physical practice in the garden.
