Traveling alone in a strange country can be dangerous for a man or a woman - even in a country as safe as China is. The only crime we were informed of when I sailed to China in 1978 was rape; at that time there was virtually no other crime in China.

Rape is a problem all over the world - not just in China.

My years as a sailor taught me a 5 travel rules good for both men and women:

#1 - You are responsible for your own safety.
#2 - Stay out of bars and clubs if you are alone. 
#3 - Do not drink to drunkeness (or take intoxicating drugs).
#4 - Do not walk through parks or unlighted roads at night. 
#5 - Enjoy the friends you meet while traveling, but do not trust them.

If you keep your eyes open and use common sense, you will have a wonderful time.[/quote]
