Ellyse's advice is good. Shenyang is the capital of Liaoning, large industrial city with lots of stuff to do: especially worth seeing are the Gugong (Imperial Palace) and the tombs (Bei Ling and Dong Ling), there's also the snow TV tower. Dandong is worth a trip to see the border with North Korea and there is a war museum there. I used to live in Benxi and can safely say there's nothing worth visiting in the city itself, but I would recommend a day trip from Shenyang to see the Water Caves (Shui dong). Changchun is in Jilin Province, but in my opinion a much nicer city than Shenyang, though without such grand historical connections. A great sculpture park there, and also the offices from where Puyi (Last Emperor) used to run his "puppet" government. Changbaishan is also in Jilin Province. A mountain to climb with amazing natural scenery and famous "Heavenly Lake" (Tian chi). Keep in mind the October holidays are a nightmare time to travel and anywhere you go is going to be busy, so keep destinations to a minimum and do some thorough checking out of one or two cities is my advice. Why not check out the Liaoning Province & Jilin Province pages on here.... there's lots of reviews on places of interest around them. Whatever you decide, have fun :)
