There are also inclusive trips. Ask at your hotel. Many leave quite early and be prepared for a minimum 45 minutes in a souvenir shop just after u leave Guilin. All-in fare onthe Chinese boat is around 250, or 350 on the foreigner boat. There are over a hundred ppl on each boat... 200 boats make the trip each day, and they are not overly crowded. Apart from the food on the Chines boat (baisc) you might as well use it. The commentary in either languge is not much good. You never get told anything worthwhile about the karst mountins or about the history of the area, all you get atre the tourism names for each of the outcrops (weeping mother for example). It is an enjoyable cruise but at 4 hours is a bit overlong. When you disembark you run the gauntlet of souvenier sellers...very very touristy. You will have a few hours in Yangshuo, or you can forfeit the return BUS trip and stay in Yngshuo where there is plenty of accom. There is plenty to do there, but it is very touristy. I do recommend the Impressions light and sound show though, excellent. All teh major trips and teh light show are around 180 rmb, cheap enough for foreign tourists but pricey for those of us who earn our money here. You should not need an interpreter in Yangshuo as it is so touristy, your hotel can arrange most things for you. If you get stuck you can ask another foreigner! There are plenty of tourist restauarants, pretty lights etc, and loud bars, even a coupel of quiet ones. Don't let your wife go to the rockclimbers' bar on her own... best physique Chinese young men I have seen anywhere! There's quiet a bit to see in Guilin, I prefer it to Yangshuo, don't ignore the park by the river to the north, just a few rmb to go in during the day... very pleasant. There are glitzy 'lake' cruises at night if you fancy that (well in the summer there are, I don't know about winter).
