Each syllabus needs to be modernised.... my college was exceptionally backward looking (university students not allowed out of the campus during the week... and many other things) so it is not surprising that the syllabus was inappropriate.  There was almost NO Ebnglish language stimulation - NO modern books on any subject, no pictures etc on walls, few English language newspapers.  I was stopped from showing an English language movie each Sunday evening because 'I was using the room too much' - no-one else needed it!  NO students seemed to be failed, even though I had seven students who had NO spoken English ability at all!  There was also little help with passing the TEM exams, indeed many of the students couldn't even pass the CET basic exam (for non-Engl majors).

It's true the students were mostly marginal, and should not have been doing a uni course based on their Middle school achievements, so the graduation results may be expected to be modrate.  This uni was privately run for profit, within the mainstream system.

Also, uni's should not provide many places for English Majors.  What are needed are combined courses: English with one of Business, Law, Engineering etc.  That will help equip them for employemnt in businesses that need some language skill.

Maybe other indstitutions are better, another a few kilometres away seemd to be, at least it didnt treat the students like prisoners.  I would like to hear from others.  And, if nothing else, I understand that China .IS changing fast and somethings may slip behind[/quote]
