My cigarettes joke was in reference to traditional Chinese weddings where the man pays the bride's familly a dowry [pay the father some money for marrying his daughter] and also bring many gifts for the wedding. I believe that the weddings traditionally also often took place betweeen a man and a woman coming from different villages, but close to each other. On the day of the wedding, it was the tradition for the man's familly and friends to carry the couple's gifts and furniture by hand from his village to the bride's village (or sometimes half of the way where the bride's familly would take over). And during that trip, the 'carriers' were often "paid" with cigarettes; hence my joke. The longer the trip between the bride's and husband's village, the more cigarettes it would take. Nowadays, with inter-racial weddings occuring so often, you can image how long those trips would be...chances are that the husband's friends would die of lung cancer before they ever reach the wedding ceremony!!

...I hope I've now been a better professor to you now... and that the lesson will not leave you with a bitter after taste (from smoke). Don't put yourself down by saying that you're stupid or slow; asking for clarifications is the best way to learn and a clear sign of intelligence; the teacher was clearly to blame in this case...
