Just tonight we had a fire in my building in Hu zho an. The fire alarm did not ring, and only found out about the fire as black smoke entered the apartment.

After rallying the remaining apartments on my floor and instructing them to at least use wet towels to reduce smoke inhalation we tried the stair case, but the emergency lights did not work, and there was no way with the smoke to go down. About 10 minutes later the elevator came with 3 fire department guys, and we took it down.

We got lucky, the fire was concentrated in one apartment on the 15th floor, but if the fire would have spread and moved upward, our survival chances would have been low, in large part due to the fire alarm not working.

So even that suzhou is save, no crime, and in general a good place to live, you do have higher risks living in a country where maintenance on such simple items as fire alarms is neglected.[/quote]
