I think you should be hopeful but WARY. You should be hopeful because I am sure that there are good muslim men out there. There are GOOD MEN out there, who I am sure treat their wives and children with respect and do not marry or rape ten year old girls. However, you should be wary. You should be wary because there are cultural differences that you must pay attention to. But I think these differences are much more subtle than just paying attention to the Koran and what it says. It is not so important to check the person's religion as it is to pay careful attention to how it is practiced. First of all, how religious is he? Second of all, what country is he from? It is very different to be from a secular muslim country than from a religious state, like iran or saudi arabia. Third, do you have similar education levels? Values? Views on life? Fourth, what are his parents views? Have you met them? Is he from a metropolitan city or from the countryside? This is very important because just like in america, in muslim countries the countryside is more conservative and more religious.

So you see the factors are much more delicate than it seems. I have seen successful muslm-non muslim unions - but usually they have been cases where both the western and muslim parties are knowledgeable and open to the other person's culture -it does not work when either the westerner is clueless or the muslim is closed minded. SO be very careful. But do not assume he's out to get you.
