Have you watched the Red Cliff directed by John Woo? It has been very popular in China recently. Except the spendid warring scenes, some actors or actresses' lines were also very exciting. Here are two sentences. No.1 天下兴亡,匹女有责. It is said by Sun Shangxiang performed by Zhao Wei. Did you find anything wrong with this sentence? Originally, it is said as "天下兴亡 (Tian 1 Xia 4 Xing 1 Wang 2),匹夫有责 (Pi 3 Fu 1 You 3 Ze 2)". In English, it means "Every man alive has a duty to his country". However, "匹夫" has been changed into "匹女" in the movie. Actually, this idiom was said by Gu Yanwu who lived in the Qing Dynasty(1368 - 1644). In the movie, it was spoken out by Sun Shangxiang who lived in the period of Three Kingdoms(220 AD--280AD). Unbelievable! Did she travel through time to learn this idiom? What's more, "天下兴亡 (Tian 1 Xia 4 Xing 1 Wang 2),匹夫有责 (Pi 3 Fu 1 You 3 Ze 2)" is the correct expression. No.2 略懂. This phrase has been repeated many times by Zhuge Liang in Red Cliff, who was performed by Takeshi Kaneshiro. He used this phrase correctly but repeated it too much. 略懂 (Lue 4 Dong 3) means "know a little of something" in English. However, modern Chinese people seldom use this phrase. It is too old and usually can be seen in the classical Chinese. Today we say "知道一点" or something else.
