As the only ATP World Tour Masters 1000 stop in Asia, of the nine total locations worldwide, Shanghai will see the world’s top 45 players competing for a total of 4 million dollars in prize money and the first ATP WOrld Tour Masters 1000 trophy awarded in the region. In contrast to the eight elite players in the year-end Tennis Masters Cup, there will be 56 competitors in the singles draw and 24 teams in doubles. The remaining singles draws will be assigned to wild cards and qualifying winners.

To ensure all 99 total matches can be presented in the coming ATP World Tour 1000 Masters from October 10-18, the Qizhong Tennis Center, with its magnolia-shaped roof, will be enlarged to hold more stadiums and courts, 
including a 5000-seat Grand Stand Court 2, a 2000-seat Grand Stand Court 3 and more outdoor courts. The construction of the additional stadiums is well underway and will be completed before August 2009.
