Beware of this Chinese Herb / Medicine Shop in Hong Kong
By LTHS_22 | 7/12/2010 11:32:52 AM

I was in HK with my family just last week and it was an enraged as well as disappointed trip for my family.

We went into this Chinese medicine shop (my dad wanted to buy some dried scallop, will give the shop name and location below) and the shop assistants started to introduce ginseng and another chinese herb(looks like "curly macaroni"). The shop assistant was well-awared that my dad was not very well-versed with chinese and told him that ginseng and this other chinese herb was selling at discount. He mentioned the price per weight and thinking that the price is reasonable (HK$480 and HK$300 respectively), my dad did not object and the shop assistant quickly weigh the herbs and you can see that the other shop assistants were very fast in assisting this guy to grind to powder form or cut into smaller pieces. When the total bills comes, it come to HK$31000+ (versus HK$480 + HK$300).
The shop assistant then itemised and calculated the items for us and it CHANGES!! the weight units and therefore when multiple to the cost per weigh into this enormous amt. We argued and 1 after another shop assistants keeps taking turns to get us to pay saying it is grind to powder, can't sell, etc.
In short, we pay HK$8000 for less than 1/3 of the items.
Lesson learned:-
1) Ask the shop for the exact price for the items before any thing!
2) Stop them from grinding or cutting until you get the price right
written down!
3) Look out for the receipt. (This ship does not have the name,
registration number of the company).

The shop name is TAK HING (Group) Medicine Company. It is along 334 Nathan Road, Kowloon. Quite near to Nathan and Easton Hotel.

I am writing this hoping to warn other tourists about this particular shop and hopefully no one fall into their prey again.
I just hope no tourist ever need to experience what my family went thru...!

Change money
By T90R | 7/3/2010 1:32:02 AM

If you walk to HK from Shenzhen just on your foot, exchange money at China side in some of small exchange points. At June 2010 they exchange 100 RMB for 114 HKD without any fees. At same time HK exchange take 50 HKD fee in most place and give only 104 HKD for 100 RMB in better case.

A pawn shop in the hustles of old tramway
By FAERIEQUEENE | 7/22/2008 11:38:42 AM

This new attraction in the heart of Wan Chai is a pawn shop in its last incarnation. The urban renewal project in Johnston Road, Wanchai, now houses an art gallery and a restaurant/pub.. The heritage building in colonial style with verandahs, is also located near the former site of the Wedding Card Street, one of the casualities of Wan Chai’s redevelopment.

In the hustles of the tramway, the building is good to take picture with.

The restaurant/pub is however notorious in its service and food quality in relation to its price…

A trendy Chinese restaurant is just opened and yet to be evaluated…

Cheap way from Nanjing to HK via KCR
By MUDDIEDKNEES | 4/13/2008 12:24:10 AM

The goal was to find the cheapest way to go to Hong Kong from Nanjing and spend all the money we save on clothes. Me and my wife took this trip December 2007.

We flew from Nanjing to Guangzhou, booking highly discounted tickets via Elong.net. The tickets cost us around RMB1800 roundtrip for two people. Then we took the KCR train to HK. KCR tickets cost us RMB85 per person each way, so that was 380 roundtrip total for two.

We stayed at the Cosmic Guest House in Nathan Rd. It was very cheap and small, but clean. The building, Mirador Mansion, was a little creepy though. The hotel cost us RMB500 for three nights. Not bad for a hotel in a nice area, right next to the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station. Call +852 2369 6669 to book or go to LonelyPlanet.com.

If you like numbers, the trip cost us less than RMB3000 for two people. Note that food can be expensive in Hong Kong. To go cheap, go fast food. Save money for the best part--shopping. We spent the rest of our budget on clothes, shoes, and a cool cell phone.

An important tip for mainland China residents: don't change your shopping money to HK$. You can pay for almost anything using your UnionPay debit card. You won't get charged for anything and you'll get a much better exchange rate than what any of the HK money changers can offer.
