Finally Peace and Quiet!
By LOVESASIA82 | 10/28/2006 9:00:05 PM
The Great Mosque was so nice. It was the most beautiful "tourist attraction" I went to while in Xi'an. DO NOT forget your camera you will want to take a million pictures and they will all be postcard beautiful! It is only 12 Yuan (1.70 CAD) so if you are in Xi'an for a long period of time and you are staying close to the Mosque you can always go there for some peace and quiet. There were not very many tourists and it was so peaceful. Bring a book or your journal to write in. It was really nice and relaxing. To get there just take a taxi to the drum tower, go through the big tunnel. Once through you are in the Muslim Quarter of Xian. I would take a nice alley way to get there it is to your left once through the tunnel. You will see some tables and will notice it is a long alley. Keep going till you get to a point where you can make a turn. You will see a window where you can pay and the entrance. I can't remember if it says "The Great Mosque" in English but I don't think so. If these directions are confusing see "shopping"

What a walk!
By LOVESASIA82 | 10/28/2006 3:08:11 PM
When you are in Xi'an you really should walk or bike on the wall. If you don't know yet there is a huge wall that surrounds the city. I believe that you get on top from the "North Gate" Only! I was tired by the time I climbed the stairs to get on top of the wall. It takes about an hour (if you just walk) but I would take up to two hours because you will want to look over the wall and take pictures of the city from up there. It is really nice and worth the money. I believe it costed me 40 Yuan. (5.67 CAD) this is one of the more expensive tourist sites. Once you on the wall there are also some great art shops and vendors. Don't buy the paintings there though, you can get them cheaper in the muslim market.

Best Street Stalls Ever!
By LOVESASIA82 | 10/26/2006 8:07:17 PM
This was my favourite place to shop. I will tell you how to get there. Take a taxi to the drum tower. You will see the McDonalds there. Just behind the McDonalds there is a big tunnel, this is the Muslim quarter. Go through the tunnel you will see to your left tables of goodies! This is the beginning of an alley way that goes on forever and ever. This is where I bought all my gifts. When you get to an area in the path where you can make a turn or go straight you will see a window to pay for some sort of attraction. It is the Great Mosque. It is something like 12RMB and well worth the few dollars. It was one of the most beautiful places I visited while in Xi'an.

Watch your bag!
By LOVESASIA82 | 10/25/2006 9:29:22 PM
When you are on a bus or even walking down the street you need to keep your bag close! If you have a purse make sure it has a long strap to hang across you and keep it to the front. If you use a backpack you may want to wear it with the bag in the front at times. It is a good idea to put a little bell on your zipper so when you stop to look at something you will hear if someone tries to open your bag. In Xi'an a popular area for pick pocketing is in the city center around the bell tower. The mall and high priced stores are here, put your bag in the front while walking in this area!

I Took Everything but the Kitchen Sink!
By LOVESASIA82 | 10/25/2006 9:21:58 PM
When I traveled to Xi’an it was my first time traveling out of Canada so I wasn’t sure what to pack. I was going for three weeks. I brought lots of clothes and hygiene products, even five pairs of shoes! DO NOT do this…. Everything is so cheap in Xi’an. If I wasn’t a bigger girl I could have went with just a few outfits and undergarments then bought clothes there. I would suggest you bring a very comfortable pair of shoes, well worn because you will do a lot of walking. If you wear a size 9 or more (female) you probably can’t get shoes. Also if you are tall you may have trouble as well (for clothing). Just do not forget your camera, and take a backpack or larger purse with a zipper to keep your goodies in while shopping! Although you can get that here too VERY cheap! I bought three fake Louis Vitton purses while there and they were about $8.53 CAD! And they look VERY real!
