Essential Harbin Travel Tips for First-Time Visitors
By SANETRAVELLER | 1/29/2025 10:15:26 PM
Dress for Extreme Cold – Harbin winters reach -30°C (-22°F), so wear thermal layers, a down jacket, gloves, and insulated boots. Hand warmers are useful. Visit During the Ice Festival – The Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival (January–February) is the main highlight, featuring ice sculptures, light shows, and winter activities. Explore Beyond the Festival – Visit St. Sophia Cathedral, Zhongyang Pedestrian Street, Siberian Tiger Park, and try winter sports at Yabuli Ski Resort. Try Local Cuisine – Sample Harbin-style hotpot, Guo Bao Rou (sweet & sour pork), and Russian-influenced foods at local restaurants. Cash & Payments – Mobile payments (WeChat Pay, Alipay) dominate; carry some cash if needed, as foreign cards aren’t widely accepted. Transportation – Harbin Metro, buses, and taxis are convenient, but traffic can be heavy. Use translation apps for directions. Basic Mandarin Helps – Few locals speak English, so learn key phrases or use a translation app. Respect Local Customs – Queue politely, avoid touching sculptures, and be mindful of local etiquette. Enjoy Harbin’s winter magic with these tips!

How to get a taxi to the city in the airport at midnight?
By SLWANG5227 | 3/12/2017 7:38:46 AM
As you arrived in Harbin Taiping Airport at midnight, you don't have much choice. You can take a Taxi at the picking up point, it is across the road from the airport exit. Drivers will either try and negotiate a price or tell you they will go by the meter, either way it's in their favor. I can tell you a reasonable price for a taxi at that hour will cost you between 150-180 RMB including toll fee of 20RMB. Drivers will agree a price and then try to charge you extra for the Toll!
If you go be meter, keep your eye on the meter as they have been known to change very quickly!
Make sure the taxi you board is a proper taxi in the queue and not through touts since it will probably pass 12 midnight by the time you board the taxi.
If you would not want to the hassle of getting into an argument with the Taxi driver in the middle of the night. I would suggest you book a Uber or DiDi Driver by advance which probably cost RMB 150 total.

Shuttle Bus
By DUNC | 9/25/2006 7:30:13 PM
From Harbin airport, leave baggage claim and walk straight and purposefully to the exit which will be almost directly ahead of you (it's a very small airport), avoid the taxi drivers, (100+ RMB to town) and head for the ticket office for the bus, if no-one is there, wait, they will come back!
If you wait a long time check outside, there's normally a bus waiting and they'll guide you to the ticket booth if you missed it.
It's only 20 RMB to the town centre.(AUG 2006)
The bus will pass the RAILWAY STATION after about 30-35 minutes,(cheaper Hotels from 120 pppn).
The final stop is approx. 10 minutes later at the CAAC Hotel, it's about half way down ZHONGSHAN LU, one of the main arterial routes through town.
Bus 103 1Y standard 2Y AirCon from Song Hua River (North) to Hong Qi Street (South East) via Station/Qulin Shopping Area/ Zhongshan Lu from roughly 0530-2230.

Be For Time Tea Houses
By LEMONCACTUS | 9/23/2006 10:50:49 PM
Recommeding this place as somewhere to escape from the bitter cold of winter in Harbin. Great place to people watch and relax.
Cafe like atmosphere, small tables on different levels. You can read magazines or the morning paper, play cards or watch videos on the TVs suspended from the ceiling.
For 18RMB you can order as many drinks as you like: tea, soft drinks and warm milk drinks. You also get comlimentary dishes of nuts and fruits. You can order food or ice cream etc, this will cost extra.
Enjoy :)

The whole European-style building is purely built by ice. In addition all its tables, tablewares, chairs are made of ice. Amazing! Have a try!

Snow and Ice world
By YCATSOLONG | 2/20/2005 6:33:31 PM
Got to Harbin about 11:30pm from a flight from Kunming. The airport is a fair way out of Harbin. All the taxi drivers hounded us to take a taxi into town. Very expensive trip, better alternative is to take the bus only 20 yuan. Buses wait outside the airport. Found a nice, cheap little place to stay for 40 yuan right near the train station, very warm and comfortable. Next day took a taxi ( 20 yuan ) to the ice and snow festival. Remember, Harbin's temperture can get to - 35 degrees celsius so keep warm! The enterance fee is 80 yuan but I guess if you are in Harbin, you probably should go and see it. There are lots slides to keep people amused and the sculptures are quite impressive, if you have not been to Quebec that is, the wind is very cold though and we got riped off for a pot of tea costing 40 yuan! it was tasty though. Beware, it's quite expensive for anything to purchase including slides and taking photo's of camels, just try and sneak a slide in, it's good fun. Remember, if you are not acustomed to cold weather, be prepared for some. I've been living in Mudanjiang ( about 4 hours train from Harbin ) for 3 months and I'm still not use to it, I am Australian though. Have fun!

Winter trips
By DUNC | 1/2/2005 6:58:53 PM

Harbin..what can I say, First try the river swimming/dip. You don't know anyone but first break the ice and then literally break the ice and in you go! Only 11 hours by fast train from Beijing, full of Russian architecture, visit the pedestrianised Zhongyang Dajie, (Central St)for a site of the flood monument dedicated to those who lost their lives in the 1998 and 1950's floods, see the river, (Song Hua He) at the top end of the street in winter and go skating, or in summer for a row and a swim... 10minutes and 1 or 2 yuan from the main station on bus 103 after getting off at the Russian built Cathedral of St. Sophia. Once you've seen the square and inside to a short history (in Chinese) of the city go to the front of the cathedral and cross the road, turn right walk down the road and turn left at the corner, beside Govt. Square and keep going straight crossing the roads till you hit a cobbled road. Left takes you to the Holiday Inn, right takes you to the river! Enjoy p.s. the bus stop is across the road to the left as you leave the station. Return buses leave from near the flood monument to your right if you face the river opposite the ubiquitous American fast food emporium.
