To Mt. Huashan
By DAISY | 11/29/2004 11:32:33 AM
From the Xian Airport: The Xian Inertnational Airport is about 138 km from Mt. Huashan. With the speedway, you would only spend one and half hours to get Huashan from the airport.
From the Railway Station: Take off at the Huanshan stop, and take public bus to the scenic area, about RMB3. From Xian Station, there have so many special lines to Huashan. According to the type of the vehicle, the price would be RMB11, RMB16, RMB18, RMB21 respectively.
Long-Distance Bus: At the Tangdu Bus Station (at the Langle Zhonglu) of the eastern Xian City, you can take the bus to Huayin county where Huashan lies. About every 10 minutes, one bus starts off. Single ticket: RMB15-20.

When to see the Warriors in Xian, see my experience...
By FFEJ | 10/29/2004 9:49:21 AM
When you visit the terra cotta warriors, do beware of the museum officials, who will charge you RMB 200 to take a picture of the reconstructed warriors. You may follow what I did: if the guards catches when you take the picture, just pretend to be Japanese and. Trust me, because it worked for me... Just for your reference : )

To the Xian Airport from the downtown
By DAISY | 10/25/2004 10:44:42 AM
Of course the shuttle bus is the ideal means to / from the airport, but you always should take about one hour to wait for the next one setting off if you are unfortunately miss one which is just leaving. Generally speaking, at most hotles, you can take the shuttle bus, but it is always difficult to find the hotle's exact loation near your location. With the time passing, and the flight takeoff time approaching...
So Taxi would be the best alternative. You should get to a fixed price before getting into the car. It should be RMB80 at most, and the toll (RMB5) shouldn't be paied by you.

Mt. Huashan should be included in your Xian trip....
By DAISY | 10/19/2004 10:46:52 AM
Huashan is a breathtakingly impressive mountain range just outside of city. I started climbing the mountain at around midnight, about 22:00 pm. It well took me about 5 hours to get to the apex. To catch the special and wonderful time of the sunrise, I think the long tiring work deserves!!. At several thousand feet above sea level and sharp cliffs on all sides, sunrise on top of Huashan beats sunrise on a beach any day of the week !!

The best way to get around is...
By DAISY | 10/15/2004 10:59:58 AM
The best way to get around is to take taxi. Taxies in Xian are not expensive and save time. The hire price is 5(or 6 for a better car)Rmb which covers the first 3 kilometres and an additional fee of 1.2/kilometres applies for additional mileages.

From the Airport, Airport Shuttle Bus
By ANNIE | 9/3/2004 9:42:52 AM
When you arrive in Xi'an you may have three options: 1) take a taxi 2) take a shuttle bus, which ticket is sold on the counters located on the arrival hall in the airport 3) walk out of the arrival hall and take the small shuttle buses parked just outside.
I suggest option #3. Fare is RMB25 (around $3) and you get safely to the Bell Tower in less than one hour. And you still have money to have a nice dinner, if you want.

travel tips to China
By BETH | 8/11/2004 5:03:52 PM
I have been to China 4 times and am also doing a 3 week return trip from Sept 23 to Oct 15.
I would recommend going from Xi'an to JiuZhaiGou then to Guilin, that way you are going in a smooth arc and not flying back north over the same area. Also Oct 1 to 8 is a national holiday week. So a lot of people will be traveling.
I have found that going to travel websites and checking the China tours to be helpful. It helps to plan the order of cities to visit and the sites to see. Get a travel book. I use lonely planet. It tells me what the normal charge for a taxi ride is from the airport to the city.
If possible, pre-plan your pickup from the airport to the hotel. If you have not made arrangements be ready to negotiate for the fare. I stayed in Yangshao, 39 km south of Gulin. The trip is about 1.5 hours from the airport. The hotel charges Y495(RMB) for the ride from the airport. I was able to negotiate the trip back to airport down Y200. I was traveling with my 2 brothers so had to pay more then the normal Y80.
Remember the exchange rate. It can be fun to negotiate if you like doing it. But my brother spent 10 minutes trying to talk a vendor down from 10Y to 8Y per DVD when I pointed out that he was haggling over less than $0.25.
Other tips: Pedestrians only have the right to be run over. Tap water is not potable unless boiled. Be aware of the porcelain trench, I never found a hotel that did not have a western style toilet in the lobby. Always have tissues, TP is not regularly provided.
