I'm a newcomer to the site and have surmised that I won't be able to rent a car or motorcycle to travel around China, is that correct? Thank you!

It is possible to rent a car in China, but you need a Chinese driving licence (you can also get a temporary one). I'm not sure if you can get this if you don't live here. Anyway, suppose you can get it, you still need to do some medical tests and some examination about the rules and pay some money. You can find more info on http://www.cbbc.org/china-guide/cftw/around.html
But if you're here as a tourist and you don't know China very well I would not recommend to rent a car. The traffic here is not the same as in Europe or USA, it's not so easy to find how to drive somewhere if you don't know the place and outside the big cities road conditions are not always very good. Furthermore renting a car will cost you much more than travelling around by train and taking public transportation or taxis in the cities, because taxis are very affordable and most of the time the service is good.
