haha security,

i spent one year in luoyang, henan province [2003-2004] and many people were saying not to go back late, not to take this or that road if after 22.00, and especially in winter, and you know what, nothing ever happened to me..

last monday i came back home by cab, it was around 23.30 and talked "security" to the driver, his opinion was that qingdao is a secure city. little remark, better not go to some places he enumerated [no idea where are they, probably in the suburb..] if late at night.

i think that you'd better open your eyes, and not pretend that you are always right in china, even if you are!

I had many small incidents, but i never felt in serious danger as i did in the USA.

In general, i would recommend people to be extra aware around train/bus stations, and poorer areas with beggers on the street. Also be aware if your staying in the extremely low-cost (25-50 yuan/night) Chinese accomodation which i think is illegal anyway. And taxi drivers in Shanghai will fleece you for every yuan you have, you have been warned.

From a tourist point of view, it looked like Chinese authorities dealt with criminals well with harsh punishments, especially if their victims are tourists.

Tianjin is the most secure city I've ever seen, but that was from the experience a few years ago.

This is to encourage people to be adventurous, it works better on robbers than on ordinary people who just want to be safe.

RITA,

it incourages foreigners who are affraid to go out of their home to have a meal in a CHINESE [let's say a FOREIGN] restaurant or a drink in a CHINESE bar to have it a try.

you all know what is famous Henan province for! i spent a whole year there, have visited so many places, several times in the coutryside. as i'm a young guy who likes going out and coming home late, nothing ever happened to me.

if you are not looking for troubles, nothing will happen to you too..
