Buying train tickets

I have just been told that one can now buy train tickets for any station from any other stations eg. buy tickets for trains leaving Chengdu from Kunming. Does anyone know if that is correct or true or able to verify? Thanks.

Yes, theoretically but not doable. There are special ticket windows at the stations selling tickets for any other destinations. However, the fact is few people can get what they want there.

If possible, better ask travel agency or ticket office.
