i think the most practical and convenient way for a western people to stay in china is to be a tutor in a foreign language school.

another way : write and contact as many foreign companies as possible, contact other foreigners you know, be very patient (99 out of 100 replies will be no, if you even get a reply), but if you're lucky (and it helps if you know some people), you can get a job. That's the way I did it to get a job in Shanghai. Of course everything depends on which major you have. If you can't find a job and still want to live and work in China : take canfly's advice and become an English tutor. While doing this, you can learn Chinese for several months and if you can speak Chinese, it will be much easier to find a job.

Yes, it very hard to hunt a satisfying job at present, even though for a foreign in such cities with more opportunities as Shanghai, Shenzhen, ect. So as what Yazoo said above, the most important are your major and ability. And I found most foreigners all work as the English teachers or tutors in some university. It is also a good chance for you to learn more about China and Chinese. Try your best, and good luck!
