Am a mature woman, well travelled, always travel solo. Have been reading about China and wondering if worthwhile? Much discussion about rudeness, pickpockets, crime... I would appreciate feedback from other mature solo travellers, if possible. Thanks.

Don’t worry, Hesitant. I’m not a female, but mature too and I never had some problem when traveling in China. The people are amiable and helpful. Evidently, it’s necessary to take the same precautions as in every part of the world: don’t handle money in public; don’t use jewelry. You will accosted by a lot of “painting students”, who wants to sell them to you(they are very good sellers!!!). In some cities, small children will say you they are hungry, some taxi drivers will try to overprice the fare… Exactly how it happens in many others countries, as in my Brazil. If you don’t face this, you will never know the wonder of this China, that today is one of the main world potency (and will grow more and more...). Go there, and enjoy.

Good Luck!

Hi there,
I'm a female and also travel solo in China although I prefer some company some of the time, but like Croberto says, be practical, use your common sense, do as you do where you've travelled before.

Unless you are heading into really remote places on your own you should have no problems.

While all the things you mentioned are happening in China, it is a world wide syndrome.

Just be careful and enjoy yourself.

Thanks to all of you for your replies. Was just in Japan last April and the freedom there, the kindness of the people and the generally 'no-fear' attitude was wonderful! Am now considering a small-group tour with free time. Is there any that you can recommend personally? Thanks again.

I've written about crime and my bad experiences in previous posts.

If you carry out the general precautions that you would travelling anywhere else in the world, you will be as safe as anywhere.

I am a traveller who takes many risks, but that's the way i like it.
