I am currently in training to run a marathon and would like to continue my road training whilst visiting China. I would prefer to run the open road as opposed to a stadium track. Is this possible? my first city is Chengdu. Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah, along the river in the city center they have a nice green belt with walkways, if it is not too crowded you could practice their without dangerous traffic.

Thanks a lot. One more question if you don't mind. Are there gyms open to the public in most areas of China. I know that most upmarket hotels have gymnasiums but I would prefer to have nothing to do with them.

Your english is fine by the way.

Sorry, I didnt stay very long in Chengdu. No idea about gyms. There are some Chengdu "specialists" on this board who can give you a hand.

Have fun in Chengdu!

This is a very good idea. It will be a nice trip.
Just a map , some useful Chinese word and brave .I've known many people who finished this trip. Most of them are foreigners. After a deliberate preparation ,I am sure you will have a nice trip.

Public gyms are plentiful in large cities in China, while spotting them can sometimes be a problem although many of them are on the 2/3/4 floors of buildings with plate glass windows so you can enjoy a view while working out and the reverse, all can see you working out.

Just ask someone when you get to Chengdu to point you in the right direction.
