I have a green card and Chinese passport (so legally still a Chinese citizen), and my boyfriend is a US citizen. We plan on staying in the same hotel room while visiting Shanghai. But I have read somewhere that if a foriegner takes a Chinese citizen (mostly girls) to their hotel rooms after visitation time (usually after 11PM), they will get arrested. Is that true? Should we stay in separate places?

If you stay in stars hotels , there is no matter. I was there twice and always stayed with my American boyfriend. What you should do is registered both of your pasport when you check in and book the room for two people ( double room). Have a great journey !!

Some people on this board reported that they even did not get a hotel room as a mixed unmarried couple. For my experience, I can reassure you I never had any problem in all the major cities and not only in stars hotels. For Shanghai you should be even less worried, because it is supposed to be the most liberal mainland city. I dont think they really use this law, even if it might be still in power...days are over when every laowai was supposed to be a spy;-)
