But for a laowai it is not that easy:

What do the five stars on the flag stand for?
I always thought the big one stands for China mainland and the small ones are HK, Macau, Taiwan,....?

The flag of China:

Size: 5m x 3.3m;

Red grounding stands for revolution;

Yellow on the stars stand for sunshine;

Biger star stands for the CPC(Communist Party of China);

The four smaller stars stand for proletariat or working class, the class of peasants, urban petty bourgeoisie class and national bourgeois respectively.

But the meaning of the flag is about to change as you mentioned(big one stands for China mainland and the small ones are HK, Macau, Taiwan,....?). I am sure...
