The traditional custom in America when a man is asking a woman to marry him is for him to get her an engagement ring (usually diamond ring) and propose on one knee. Is the custom like this in China? If not, what is the "traditional" way to ask for a woman's hand in marriage in China? Just curious...

It is a very complicated traditional process which can last for days:

Well, no engagement at all. You just arrive at the house of your girl - with two donkeys, one horse and three sheeps. A tough bargain starts with the father. I had to bring two more sheeps from the back where I hid them in case it gets more expensive. We finally agreed and I pulled her on her hair back into my cave.
But I saved the two cows in the back;-)

Nonono, better:

As a laowai yang gui tongzhi I just go to China and steal the women;-)

I hope you can share my humour;-)))))

The reason for this goes back far into stoneage. You know the man was the hunter with the bat/club, the man always has to do the first step, weather it is a mammoth or a woman;-)
