Hi. I will be teaching in China this July/August and have been planning to do some traveling beforehand. I will arrive in Hong Kong and spend three to four nights there, followed by travel throughout the Northeast (Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, Huangshan, and any other suggested areas if you can come up with some!). I've heard that the cheapest way to book flights/rail tickets is to do so after you arrive in China. I was thinking that during my stay in Hong Kong I would check a few agencies and get some quotes to get lower prices. Would this be a safe bet? What can I expect to pay for airfare from Hong Kong to Beijing or Xian to Shanghai if I book domestically in China? Would a combination of rail/bus/air travel work better once I arrive in Beijing for travel elsewhere in the general area of China? Also, I just bought a Sony Cybershot digital camera. The instructions say it will operate from 30 F to 100 F with 80-90% humidity max. I already know the plastic bag trick for combating condensation, but do you think I could safely bring this camera without fear of it succumbing to the weather? I have the option of bringing a 35mm camera, but I would like to avoid the costs of film (and possible x-ray dangers). Thanks a lot!

If you have ehough time, Jiuzhaigou Valley can be included in your list! Yeah, I think book tickets after your arrival in China would be cheaper and safe. Do worry about that! What you should do is to get more information about the reliable travel agent, and pack your suit cases:D Have a good journey!

Ah great. Thats relieving! How long would you suggest to stay in Jiuzhaigou Valley? Are the towns nearby westernized or do they still retain a lot of their original customs? Thanks

Jiuzhaigou is located in the north of Sichuan Province and is known far and wide as "a fairyland".Its attraction lies in its simple, idyllic beauty; a fairyland, primitive and natural and still in its pristine state. With majestic and unrivalled emerald lakes, layered waterfalls, colourful forests, snow peaks and Tibetan folk villages, all blending in harmony with each other - it is nature's jewel set into the mountains. Generally speaking, Jiuzhaigou shows its peculiar scenery, but Autumn is the most magnificent season of all in the Valley. The breeze is intoxicating, while the leaves turn crimson on the trees. The colorful red autumn leaves and woods are reflected in the sparkling translucent lakes - the fallen petals float in the water. The remote sky is clear and bright. Your eyes are filled with the most beautiful view of the natural world.

Oct. is in the golden season to travel Jiuzhaigou. 7 Days are sufficient for the trip. The problem is what your choice about the routes. Normally, most people choose Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong as the two main destination for the trip. As my opinion and experience, the trip to Jiuzhaigou is toilful for either boys or girls, so the travel should not be too hurry. You can go with a tour group or just by yourself(/yourselves), the travelling convinient. Because Jiuzhaigou does not permit tourists to stay in Jiuzhaitou in the night, so you must arrive Jiuzhaigou one day before you go into it and so as to have a good sleep. Take bus from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou will cost you 8-10 hours depending on the traffic and road conditions.
