hi.
im planning to travel by rail from Xiamen on the 19th jan to Beijing (then down to shaghai later).

i want to be in beijing for Chinese new year and dont want to do the whole 35 hour trip in one go.
i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about where to stop on the way and things to see.

i know this is a crazy time to travel as trains will be busy. but i hope to be able to plan an itinerary and book in advance.

any advice on winter clothes to bring? or is it cheep to buy a warm jacket when i arrive?

thanks heaps, bec

You must have your reason to travel this way, but traveling Xiamen - Shanghai - Beijing will save quite a lot of bucks.
(Soft sleeper)
Xiamen/Beijing/Shanghai = CNY705+CNY499
34h+12h
Xiamen/Shanghai/Beijing = CNY442+CNY499
26h+12h
Well, budget is not the only problem. You will stay on the train for the extra 8 hours if you take XM/BJ/SH.

If you want to travel by rail, you can go almost anywhere you like, you do not have to choose between Xiamen and Beijing. The cover of railway network is far more extensive than you can imagine.

Yes, it IS a crazy time to travel even you plan and book your itinerary far in advance. As for the train tickets, it not only the problem of if you can get them or not, it it a problem of traveling with big noisy crowds all the time.

You can buy warm jackets when you arrive, they are not expensive.:)

Have a nice trip!^_^

I believe there're no rail maps that cover all of China, perhaps only regional ones. In fact I haven't seen much of these anywhere.

rail map ? you'll be confused to see the reticula way listed on the map ,at least I was :(
tickets are definitely hard to get and even if you got them it would be the most tough journey, you'll never imagine how crowded and disordered it would be if you have not experienced it before.
