My husband and I will be traveling to China for our 20th wedding celebration the end of March or early April. This is a dream and we want to go to 3 different cities including Tibet. We would like to stay with host families, see the sights in which a native would want to see of their own country. We plan on staying 10 days and are traveling from Japan to China back to Japan then home to USA. We would welcome any suggestions anyone might have for sightseeing/travel/lodging and food. We welcome adventure have lived in Europe for over 6 years, have traveled throughout Europe. We are physically fit and expect moderate physical activity while in China. Thank You to all who respond in advance.

Firstly I want to ask you a question. Have you ever been to China before? If not, then Tibet is really a very good choice. It is considered the most mysterious place in China by most of travlers. Since you have had Tibet in your schedule, I think another city for you is Beijing, the capital city. The reason is that you can see the past, the present and the future of China in Beijing.

Xi'an shouldn't be missed. It is the most famous historical city throughout China. Meanwhile it is world wide known for its Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses. :)

Since u are coming from the USA/Japan, u must have enough experience of the big cities. However, if you are interested in historicals of China, then Beijing & Xian are 2 beautiful cities that you shouldn't miss. Only concern is ythat you may not have enough time on hand - esp if you wanna go Tibet. Tibet should be beautiful and a completely set of environment from most of the rest of China. Enjoy it and maybe leave the other part of China for subsequent visits.

I agree with pinetree,Beijing & Xian are 2 beautiful cities that you shouldn't miss!Actually,Tibet is also mysterious for chinese, and it is a good idea that you live with the native family,I just have experience with mongolian family, and they are very ebullient and hospitable,I hope you can find a good one!

I think you're trying to cover too much if you expect to go to 3 places in China within 10 days. To do Beijing reasonably, you already need about 4 to 5 days. I suppose you can do it in 3, but that's very rushed. If you really have to do 3 places in 10 days, my recommendation is Beijing (3 days), overnight train to Shanghai (3 days), overnight train/fly to Xi'an (2 days) and spend the remaining time in Beijing (2 days).

We have never been to China. We would like to live with host families. After reading the responses we have decided to come back to China/Tibet and stay for 7 days in that area for cultural enrichment. Bejing and xian would be fine for our duration of 10 days. Any feedback you could provide to us would be welcomed.
