The hotels are not that well-located, IMHO. I prefer to be located within walking distance of a good metro station to save money and transport time.

There are hostels in Shanghai that aren't bad at all. I stayed at one that was within walking distance from the Bund and it was great. I can't remember the name now but you should be able to search for hostels and find it or check out Lonely Planet. I lived in China for three years and it was a really helpful book.

I think the hostel mentioned by SYLPATIENCE is the Captain's Hostel on Fuzhou Lu. I personally will not recommend that to anyone else as I've gotten indifferent/impolite/downright rude service from them more than once. And apart from being pretty close to the Bund, there's nothing much to recommend about its location; it's at least about 15 mins walking distance to the nearest metro station, and at least half an hour to People's Square metro interchange (one stop further).
