buy a Shenzhouxing prepaid SIM card from CHINA MOBILE with a minimum of RMB50 call value. It carries number 136xxxxxxxx. China Mobile branches are all over China. Card can be topped up any time. You can use it to make/receive China local calls as well as overseas IDD calls or to short-message China and overseas. Charges are reasonable. RMB 50 is valid for 3 months effective from the time of first usage, RMB100 6 months, RMB50+RMB100 is 9 months and so on. Keep the card as souvenir or discard it when you leave China. OR you can keep it with sufficient value stored for next China trip

Hi Joyce,

if you just need to be within reach or capable to make an emergency call, just stick to your common phone card from Europe. So did I with my card from Germany and it worked out fine for the last three trips!
