Im looking to go to Hainan for a few days in late January or
February '06, probably just haikou, and I know there is a ferry
train that can take you from guangzhou to haikou, but i cant
find any info about this. Can anyone help me with this, maybe
tell me how much it is or how to reserve a ticket from outside of
guangzhou? On another note, this doesnt have to do with
hainan, but can anyone tell me what the best way to get to hong
kong from guangzhou, and vice versa, is? Do you need an hk
visa if its just for a day or 2?

K407 leaves Guangzhou main train station at 2226, reaching Haikou at 1026 the next day. In the other direction, K408 leaves Haikou at 1858 and arrives Guangzhou main train station at 0648 the next day. Price is 185/191/197 RMB for hard sleeper upper/middle/lower bunk and 286/298 RMB for soft sleeper upper/lower bunk, same for either way. Tickets go on sale about 10 days in advance; try to contact a travel agent in Guangzhou to buy in advance for you as you're coming around Chinese New Year period, when almost everyone will be travelling, and tickets will be hard to get.
The best way to reach Hong Kong from Guangzhou will be to take a bus.

Does anybody know of an English site to book the train? Im intending to use the train a few days after I arrive in China and want to avoid it being fully booked.

english site prividing reservation for train tickets, hm...seems difficult to find. Because there is no commission for them and delivery is a problem. Not like the air tickets now, all flights can issue e-tickets, so delivery is not a problem again.

In fact you can buy the tickets at any ticket office. Because now the sales system of our China got linked to the internet. For Guangzhou-Haikou ticket, you no need go to Guangzhou and buy the ticket again.

There's no direct train for Jinan -- Haikou. The best method would be to change trains at Guangzhou.
Jinan -- Guangzhou: T179 (1930--1635) 21h05min
Guangzhou -- Haikou: K407 (2125--0854) 11h29min
Price would depend on your choice of seat, sleeper and bunk. Do you want hard seat, hard sleeper or soft sleeper? For sleepers, what bunk (upper/middle/lower) do you want?
