Im planning on going to xinjiang in the next couple months (i
know its cold as hell, but i got no other time to go) and i was
hoping i could get some information about it. first off, does
anyone know if they speak any mandarin at all there? I speak
pretty good mandarin, but my friends say it wont matter
because none of them speak it there. Also, does anyone have
tips on some of the good places to go? im sure ill go to urumqi,
but are there any can't-miss spots?

They can speak Mandarin in cities, don't worry. If u go to some remote places, they may not. I suggest Turpan, an important city in ancient Silk Road as well as the hottest city in China! The temperature in Turpan should be ok in winter. What's more, remember to bring warm clothing with you. The temperature changed sharply during the day and night.

How long do you have to visit Xinjiang?

Turpan is a must see andthe surrounding grape valley, ruins and Karez system. Read the travel revies on Xinjiang for more.
Kashgar is a good melting pot of markets and men.

Ane everyone under the age of say 50 can speak Mandarin. So don't worry about communication. the cold is the killer.

Don't forget to write a review when you get back.
Have a good trip

Thanks for the tip about kanasi, ill have to check that out. Do
you know how to get there from one of the big cities? Im not
sure exactly how long ill have in xinjiang, because im going to
some other places around china too, but probably over a week. I
doubt ill stay in many cities for more than a day or so, i want to
see as much as i can in a short time. Ill be sure to write about
all the places i go to, when i get back. Im going to spend as
little money as possible, so i should have some good stories,
and lots of good pictures.

P.S. im living in harbin now, so im used to the cold. i can be
very comfortable outside in -20? weather. Its the heat that kills
me.

Kanasi is great, but winter is not a good season for travel. Shops and restaurants may close, but fewer people will make your feel better. It's in the northern part of Xinjian, you can get there from Urumqi.
Check details here:

Wish u a good trip!

Does anyone know how to aquire a frontier permit or any other
passes needed for kanasi lake? can it be done from urumqi, or
does it have to be done in burqin? I assume if i ask around i can
figure it out, but if theres anything thats especially complicated
about it I'd like to know in advance.

to get to kasani lake is from urumqi, or can you go from another
town thats closer? Also, whats a better way to get around
xinjiang, by train or bus? If someone who has been to kasani
lake, or just xinjiang for that matter, would email me to answer
a couple more questions it would be greatly appreciated. my

Where the train is available it is preferable for the long hauls if you can get tickets.

The rest is serviced pretty well by bus.

I flew into Urumqi, by bus to Turpan, by bus to Hami and then the train (soft seat)5hrs at night to Jiayuguan.

Not bad but a sleeper would have been more comfortable and then sleeper coach (old no air con) to Lanzhou on the old road.

New Highway to Lanzhou should be open by now. If I have the time I prefer to take short distance buses to avoid the sleepers as some can be pretty horrible.

I am a chinese girl living in Urumqi.Don't go to Kanasi lake in the winter. The soliders can't let you get there. The road is blocked by the heavy snow. You can only get there by bus in the summer.
