has anyone tried to go enter vietnam thru china?

Only from Vietnam to china, by foot, at the Lao Cai border post.

Things to look out for:

- departure tax leaving Vietnam, i was hit with this. From memory it was over RMB300

- Lot of thieves, and harassment before and when you cross the border.

- The customs are good, China style complacency and Vietnam style extortion. Westerners get priority but you pay for it.

DO NOT TAKE A SLEEPER BUS TO THE BORDER!!!!! If you do, i would recommend arming yourself with a carton of no-doze, gas mask and AK47!

The best way is to fly into Hanoi. Travel inside Vietnam is much easier and there are lots of western facilities, nice food and the majority of the people talk English as a second language! But its more expencive. Remember to Exchange your VND for US or RMB before you leave, because its worthless outside. I've only been a Millionaire one time in my life that was In Vietman. I have kept a bank statment which has over VND500,000,000
