Beijing and Shanghai can be included in your plan as entry and exit city, also, they worth your visit.
Then Xi'an, Tibet(if you are in rather good physical condition), Yangtze river cruise, Guilin. if you are interested in minority culture, you can go further into southwest China such as Guiyang and Kunming.
I'll be glad to suggest more if you can indicate what you are interested in. :)

if it is your first time to China, I think Beijing, Xi'an should be included, because they are good start for you to know China.

thank you Catherine and Daisy for your reply!
I like the idea of Beijing and Shanghai as entry and exit city. I was looking around the net yesterday and Beijing-Xi'an-Guilin-Jiuzhaigou-Shanghai seemed good places to visit. My interests are in traditional folk customs, historical sights and beautiful landscapes and of course beautiful people.
I would love to go to Tibet but not sure it can be done in 3week schedule. Still need to figure out the traveling times between the cities and many other things, but for now deciding places to visit based on my entry-exit city is first priority I think.
Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

thank You :)

Glad to see your response here :)
For your proposed itinerary Beijing-Xi'an-Guilin-Jiuzhaigou-Shanghai, firstly, it will need at most two weeks for you, secondly, Jiuzhaigou should rank before Guilin geographical. See the time schedule below:
Beijing: 4 days at most
Xi'an :3 days
Jiuzhaigou: 3 days
Guilin: 3 days
Shanghai: 2days
Therefore adding a 4 or 5 days tour to Tibet(Lhasa) is doable if budget is not a problem.
Then the itinerary should be: Beijing-Lhasa-Xi'an-Jiuzhaigou-Guilin(may be transfer from Chengdu)-Shanghai.
I'll be glad to propose the most must-see sites in each city should you decide your destinations.

Wish you a wonderful trip in China!

wow wonderful response :)
Exactly what I was looking for, Thany You, Catherine!
Have a few questions of the itinerary.
Does it include travel times between the cities?

Guilin(may be transfer from Chengdu) <---

Do you mean Chengdu instead of Guilin? I am not clear what you mean by transfer.
Thany You again and I am looking forward to hear your recommendations of must see sites :)
I feel like I have a personal guide. Almost:P

Yes, it is icluded the travel time. In fact, if you travel by flight, it will not take you much time on the way.
Day 1:Enter Beijing: after arrival, have a good rest to adapt the time difference. Maybe have a walk around the famous walking street Wangfujing street if your hotel is located near there.
Day 2: Bejing: Forbidden City, Tian'anmen Square, afternoon :the Temple of Heaven.
Day 3:Beijing: take a 2-hours bus to the Badaling Great Wall, climb the Wall. Then visit the neighbouring Ming Tombs.
Day 4:Beijing:Sommer Palace, Lama Temple, or maybe have some time to walk around the street to explore the city.
Day 5:Fly to Xi'an in the late morning(need 1.5 hours),arrive mid noon, after a shower and lunch, walk on the City Wall.
Day 6: Xi'an Terra Cotta Warriors, Provincial Museum, and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda.
Day 7: Have some fun by yourself? Maybe to the local snacks street.
Day 8: Take morning flight to Jiuzhaigou.
Day 09: Jiuzhaigou
Day 10: Jiuzhaigou to Huanglong Valley
Day 11: Jiuzhaigou fly to Chengdu, then transfer flight to Guilin(depending on airlines availability)
Day 12: Guilin to Yangshuo by ship on Li River.
Day 13: Leisurely in Yangshuo
Day 14:back Guilin, late flight to Shanghai
for the sightseeing in Shanghai, one and a half day is enough. Most tourists visit Shanghai mostly for shopping.

For the activities during the night time, Beijing Opera and Beijing Roasted Duck, Xi'an Dumpling Dinner should be the highlights.
