Does that mean you just want to spend one day in Chengdu city?
You can visit the Wuhou Memorial Temple and the Thatched Cottage of Du Fu. But I think there is nothing that is worth of your visit, except the snacks. If time permits, why not to see the fairy land of Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong?

Of course the RMB is the only currency in Chengdu. And the travel cheques is acceptable in most hotel and department store. But for some convenience, you'd better take some (just a little) cash with you, or Master Card, Federal Card, Visa, American Express, JCB, and Diners Card. You can withdraw cash from the Bank of China and pay for purchases at exchange centers of the Bank of China, appointed shops, hotels, and restaurants.
Consult with your bank before departing to make sure that your brand of cheque or credit card will be accepted.
