We're planning to visit Vietnam and China this summer. What we'd like to do is start in Saigon and work our way up to the Chinese border by bus or train. Once we reach the Chinese border we are hoping to cross and then connect with a train or bus to Guangzhou. Has anybody here done this before?
Any recommendations?
Thank you

Hello Sallys02,

It might help you to read the bellow quote from a previous post i made. With regards to the Vietnam side of the border, I would recommend that you try to travel together through out your journey. Hanoi was my first port of call. When there make your way to the old city and you will find lots hotel accommodation. I have no recommendations for accommodation, i did however, stay in one of the Camila chain hotels -much corrupted and running all manor of side line businesses, although this is usual. Please, keeping in mind that spending over US$10 perperson for 3 star, per night is too-much! Don't get caught in the trap of pre-booking anything. Your only keeping the agents in business. Buy all your tickets at the bus/train station before hand, this is fairly easy in Vietnam as the language barrier is lesser than that of China. I did Halong Bay, as a package, with the transport to and from Hanoi inclusive. It should cost you no more than US$45 per person. From Hanoi, i made tracks for Sapa (Lao Cai) By sleeper train - then headed for the hills in an old people mover for a few days R$R -
- Last Post -

"I've only from Vietnam to China, by foot, at the Lao Cai border post.

Things to look out for:

- departure tax leaving Vietnam, i was hit with this. From memory it was over RMB300

- Lot of thieves, and harassment before and when you cross the border.

- The customs are good, China style complacency and Vietnam style extortion. Westerners get priority but you pay for it.

DO NOT TAKE A SLEEPER BUS TO THE BORDER!!!!! If you do it should only cost RMB90, i would recommend arming yourself with a carton of no-doze, gas mask and AK47!

The best way is to fly into Hanoi. Travel inside Vietnam is much easier and there are lots of western facilities, nice food and the majority of the people talk English as a second language! But its more expensive. Remember to Exchange your VND for US or RMB before you leave, because its worthless outside. I've only been a Millionaire one time in my life that was In Vietman. I have kept a bank statement which has over VND500,000,000"
