My boyfriend and I are heading to China in September. As he has a friend living in Beijing we would like to stay with him for a few days but would also like to do a few things on our own. Is it possible to stay in Beijing and do the sights there yourself and then get tours to other cities or is it too much hassle? I would love to go to Xian and Yangshuo any recommendations? I also want to relax while on holiday if at all possible, could anyone recommend where would be good for this, as all the tours seem to be very intensive. Thanks for all your help.

No problem at all to do your own in Beijing. It's easy to arrange for travel to other cities as well from Beijing. Indeed local travel packages are very tight and usually value for money. But you may not like the pace. Would recommend free & easy if you have the time to spare and adventurous enough.

It's very easy to take tours from the city to quieter places outside. But I agree that tours are very expensive, very high-energy events. But you might end up meeting some interesting people as a result. If you are very adventurous and want to mmake new friends and get exposure to the language, book a seat on a bus but without a tour agency. And for relaxation, there's nothing like getting a massage and treating yourself to a few hours at a spa. They are pricier in Beijing than other cities in China but I have never paid more than the equivalent of 40 American dollars for a great hour-long massage. ~SK~
