My daughter speaks 'very English' English and still has trouble trying to book a train journey in China - she's ended up on a bus from HK to Xiamen and a plane from Xiamen to S'hai! Should she draw pictures ha-ha?

Don't assume that whilst English is getting popular in China, all Chinese should understand the language. To be sure, it's better u ask your daughter to learn Chinese.
Further sometimes we find difficulty understand English as spoken by the westerners. It takes some time to get used to it, too.

Yes Cully53, when in China do as the chinese do. It is your daughter's fault for not understanding the basics. (When in Rome do as the Romans do)

Speak chinese and you won't get lost. She can draw pictures. Why not? It is not a joke if she cannot understand Chinese.

Your daughter can do well if she visits the U.K.

Well, being in the forum (TCG) too long makes people think that English is so popular and everyone in the country speak English, that is so wrong! English is popular in China in schools/ colleges, but there are no space for people to practise, once young people step out of the college, they start to return their English skills back to their teachers, it won't take long for people to forget everything about a second language if they do not practise (speak, write and read). So that is easy to understand that it seems everybody is learning English, but seldom masters it.

Drawing pictures is a good way traveling in China. I think if people want to travel abroad and do not want to learn their languages, try improve their drawing skill is good way out. :-)
