| Can anyone explain how does the fare structure works in HK bus using Optus? The reason is that the prepaid card is read once only unless Sinkapore SBS buses read twice - once when board the bus and when alight from the bus. Imagine if I am making a short trip from TST to Mongkok and if I board a long distance bus does it means I am paying a long distance fare? |

| Beano You get a good point here, the card is read once only in the bus which means the fee is same for different distance. Generally, if the people just take 1-2 stops, charge is still the same for 5-10 stops. Just for example that if you want to go to the place where takes 5 stops, you should find the bus with less stops for the whole journey, it will then charge less. Nevertheless, bus is the cheapest transport in Hong Kong. Involvementstay-Serve for tourists visiting Hong Kong http://www.involvementstay.com/ involvementstay.com|enquiry |

| Thanks for your reply. But as a new visitor, how does one know which is the most appropriate bus as getting a bus to a place itself is a BIG problem. For example, I am taking a bus from Tim Sha Tsui to Temple Street in Ya Ma Tat, which bus charges the lowest fare and how do I find out? |

| HK is a small place esp HK island & Kowloon. If the weather is good & if in no hurry, taking a walk would be a nice idea. U can also try taking the small bus operated by private individual/companies - it's fixed rate too but cheaper and faster than the normal Kowloon Bus. |

| The MTR is also very convenient and not expensive. The Optus card can be used on MTR as well. |

| Beano, I agree with you that it is not easy to find the right bus which charge the least to go to the places vistors want. As a matter of that, we hardly find tourists taking the bus. MTR is convenient and it is not that expensive. If the tourists really want to find the cheapest bus to take, asking the local people would be the best way. | There are some bus stops with 50m stretch and there are some indication to show you where you should wait the bus you want. No matter how long it is, people can know where they should queue thr the indicator Involvementstay- Serve for Hong Kong tourists http://www.involvementstay.com/ |
