Thank you to everyone who replied - I am sorry if anyone misunderstood what I was trying to say! It's true that we have been told that many Chinese people now learn English and so we thought it would be easier for my daughter! She does speak French and German but that's no help in China either! Her brother is married to a 'Hong Kong Chinese' girl and she gave her some words to say in Chinese characters but these were only about my daughter being a vegetarian - not about trying to get a train!!! My daughter is only visiting China for 3 weeks and learning Chinese is very difficult for us! Best wishes to everyone who replied and thanks again! x

There are more and more people who can speak English in China. But not everyone. For people who can't speak Chinese, I think they'd better take an English-Chinese dictionary or some other reference books. So that they can point the English-Chinese to Chinese peole. Otherwise, find an English-speaking guy as guide.

Thank you! She has a Mandarin phrase book but I think she panics when she needs to say things/ do things! She is still having a great time and the people are lovely - it's only the travelling that I get loads of texts about! When she has found the hostel in different places she's ok and in the towns it's good - it's moving on again when the problem starts again!
