Do you speak Chinese or understand any Chinese? It's hard to answer your question when you don't provide enough information. Generally you won't have language problems in the airport and well-touristed areas, you should be able to find at least 1 English speaker to aid you. Bring a phrasebook if you don't speak Chinese as it will help a lot... Rough Guide's Mandarin phrasebook is recommended.
For money, bring a combination of cash and travellers' cheques (in your own currency, if it's a easily convertible currency; if not, USD is a good choice) as well as at least 1 card with Mastercard/VISA/Maestro/Cirrus/PLUS logo so that you can get RMB cash from ATMs as well as over the bank counters. The exchange rate is fixed so exchanging cash or travellers' cheques is the same no matter where you are (bank, high-class hotel or airport currency exchange counter).
Get a Shanghai guidebook and read it, those will answer a lot of basic questions. Lonely Planet's Shanghai guidebook is a good start.
