don't take the taxis to the subway, obviously, cuz it's quite a ride. there are plenty of buses that will take you to the city proper, from there you are never far from the subway, you can ask the person who gets you on the bus - they should be able to speak english.

china can be very cheap depending on how you travel. a hard sleeper train ticket from beijing to shanghai I'm guessing would be about $40 USD but they do discount all their airfairs if it's not peak travel time so you can check there. you might be able to find a flight for less than $100 USD.

get a lonely planet china and i think your questions will be answered.

Hi there,

From the Captial Airport, you could take Airport Shuttle But to subway stations and downtown. The ticket fee is RMB16/person. There're several routes so before you get on, just make it out where you want to go.

Taking a taxi may not be a good choice. It costs around RMB70(highway fee included) to go downtown.

Yes, I think LP China should be useful. I'm a local Beijingner so never have a chance to read it. But I did read LP Cambodia before I made the trip. I think it was useful.

Also, actually the hotels in downtown Beijing are quite expensive. So I recommend that you make reservations for Guesthouses/Hostels. Local restaurants are not expensive, and a lunch could cost around RMB10~30. But the waiters there don't speak English, so learn some survival Mandarin would be useful.

Have fun in China!
