Hi, I will be visiting Beijing for the first time in early April. Of course I will see most the "must-see" attractions, but I also want to see something that is not exactly a typical tourist attraction. I would like to see something that is special for China, without the tourists. Something that you don't see anywhere else (not in Europe at least). Do you have any ideas where I can see something unconventional ??? I also want to do some shopping. Which outdoor markets would you recommend? Also, where could I buy a high quality men's-suit at a reasonable price (and what is a reasonable price for a good suit in Beijing, either tailormade or in a high quality shop).

I have to agree with Wocca, the best thing to do is use your feet or a bicycle and wander...the Hutong are fabulous places to explore, and you will rarely meet other 'tourists' if you avoid the hutong 'tours'... it depends what you mean by unconventional ? http://www.travelchinaguide.com/cityguides/beijing/shopping.htm this link is to TCGs Beijing shopping page, loads of useful info There are a huge number of reviews and tips of things to do under the Beijing section of this site... Happy exploring of TCG & Beijing

Hi there, If you want to buy something in outdoor markets, don't forget to bargain with the vendors, otherwise it would be a head-shaving price...
